Once the adhesive is applied, the membrane is carefully pressed into place, ensuring full contact and a strong bond. Seams between sheets are typically sealed with adhesive or tape designed for EPDM to create a watertight surface.
Ballasted
A fully ballasted EPDM roof is a type of flat or low-slope roofing system that uses ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), a durable synthetic rubber membrane, as the waterproofing layer. In this setup, the EPDM membrane is laid loosely over the roof substrate—typically insulation or a deck—and then held in place (or “ballasted”) by a layer of heavy material, such as river rock, gravel, or concrete pavers.
Mechanically Attached
In this installation method, the EPDM membrane is rolled out over the roof substrate (typically insulation or an underlayment) and fastened to the structural deck—usually made of steel, concrete, or wood—using plates and screws or other anchoring devices. These fasteners are strategically placed, often in the seams or along predetermined lines, to ensure the membrane stays securely in place, even under wind uplift forces. The seams where sheets of EPDM overlap are then sealed with adhesive tape or heat welding to create a watertight barrier.
